How I Trained Myself Into Bondage and Back Into Freedom

Life isn’t random to me. It’s a training ground.

I’ve come to see that God designed it to shape my character, not to keep me comfortable. Every day puts choices in front of me. Some are obvious, most are small. None of them are neutral. Each one trains my will. I either move toward the good I know I should choose, or I practice turning away from it.

I learned this the hard way. My own failures with addiction, promiscuity, and other self-destructive behaviors didn’t come from one dramatic collapse. They grew out of repeated choices I told myself didn’t matter. Over time, those choices became habits. And once something is a habit, it stops feeling like a decision at all.

That’s why I don’t trust the usual definitions of success anymore. Money, approval, comfort. I’ve had versions of those while my conscience was eroding. Real success shows up in whether I can choose what’s right when it costs me, whether my integrity holds under pressure, whether my freedom is actually intact.

When sin weakened me, I didn’t get free through a single moment of resolve. I tried that. It failed. What changed me was steady discipline in ordinary things. The small daily refusals. The unglamorous obedience. And God’s grace. Not grace that removed every obstacle, but grace that restored my ability to choose the good and keep choosing it.

That’s how freedom came back. Slowly. Quietly. One choice at a time.
